Catify Your Home: Cat-Friendly Spaces in Durham Region & Across Canada

A cat-friendly home isn’t about buying more cat furniture. It’s about arranging your space so your cat can climb, hide, scratch, hunt and rest in the ways cats are built to. This is called “catifying” your home, and it’s one of the simplest ways to prevent boredom, stress and many common behaviour problems before they start.

Why your cat’s environment matters

Cats need to feel safe and have things to do. When a home doesn’t offer that, you may see scratching on furniture, night-time zoomies, overgrooming, tension between cats or litter box trouble. Changing the space often helps, and it works well alongside any other behaviour plan.

What a cat-friendly home can include

Every home is different, but I often look at:

  • Vertical space: shelves, cat trees and window perches so your cat can survey the room from up high
  • Hiding spots: covered beds, boxes or quiet corners to retreat to
  • Scratching options: sturdy posts and pads in the places your cat actually wants to scratch
  • Hunting and play: daily play with wand toys, plus food puzzles and foraging games
  • Resources placed well: litter boxes, food and water set up so cats can use them without feeling cornered
  • Calm, predictable routines, which matter a lot for nervous cats

Multi-cat homes

When cats share a home, one of the biggest sources of stress is competing for spaces, so I make sure every cat has options. That means enough litter boxes, separate feeding spots, and perches and hiding places that don’t force them past each other.

A quick note on health

If your cat’s behaviour has changed suddenly, check with your vet first. A change in the home is helpful, but it can’t replace ruling out pain or illness.

How I help

Every cat and home is different, so I don’t offer a cookie-cutter plan. I will:

  1. Learn about your cat’s personality, routine and what’s going on at home
  2. Look at your space (in person or through photos and video) and spot what’s missing
  3. Suggest changes that fit your home, your budget and your cat
  4. Support you as you set it up and adjust as you see what your cat enjoys

I offer in-home visits in Durham Region and virtual sessions across Canada.
